Period:
Cretaceous

Age Interval:
Coniacian - Santonian

Province:
Benue Trough South

Type Locality and Naming

The formation is exposed in the Ogugu area (Agagu et al., 1985). Some publications consider this to be a member of the Awgu Fm; or a formation within an Awgu Gr (as used in South Benue Trough)

Synonym: Ogugu Shale; Ogugu Member of Awgu Fm

Lithology and Thickness

The formation is estimated to have about 20m of dark grey, shelly, calcareous nodules, occasional coaly plant remains, and a few bands of sandstone. In the Ogugu area, 800m of the formation is exposed in the subsurface.

Lithology Pattern:
Sandy claystone

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Transitional from the underlying Agbani Fm (Agagu et al., 1985)

Upper contact

- Unconformable (late Santonian-early Campanian hiatus) beneath the Nkporo Fm.
